It's more fun with a partner.

Hillel International Center located in Washington, it is the pulse of Jewish Life on campuses worldwide.

The address is:

Hillel: The foundation for Jewish Campus Life

Charles and Lynn Schusterman International Center

Arthur and Rochelle Belfer Building

800 Eighth Street, NW

Washington, DC 20001-3742

There are 6 HIC Fellows who work to assist all Hillel campuses.  You will get to know them at the conferences, and you should use them as resources.  The following is a list of the 6 fellows and their areas of responsibility.

Arline and David L. Bittker Fellowship - student leadership

The Bronfman Fellowship - assistant to the International Director of Hillel, organizes campus visits for Hillel's major donors (like the Bronfmans)

Israel Fellowship - birthright israel, Israel Advocacy Mission, and on-campus Israel programs

Iyyun Fellowship - accessible Jewish learning resource, works with Avi Weinstein and the Meyerhoff Center

Samuel and Helene Soref Fellowship - works with students at schools with small Jewish populations and 0-1 Hillel professionals

Weinberg Tzedek Fellowship - social action programs and alternative spring breaks, organizes Spitzer Public Policy/ Social Action Conference

Here are some people to know at the Hillel International center:

Ann Ferrine 202-449-6540 - You will talk to Ann about once a month, when you call into your conference call.  Remember to say hello, when you call.

Andrea Hoffman -202-449-6586 - Director of Dept. of Student Life.  Andrea is so easy to talk to and as a former Hillel director, she really understands the students.

Keith Krivitzky - 202-449-6535 He is the Director of Camous Israel Services, in other words Mr. Birthright israel!  You will be hearing from Keith around September to begin recruitment and through the Birthright Trip.  He is sometimes hard to reach so I call Jessica Stein - 202-449-6532, the Israel programs Associate.

Stevie Schiff - 202-449-6525 - Stevie plans and organizes Leaders, Staff Conference, Spitzer, and Lay Leaders every year, from room assignments to the lollypops you may order to be delivered to the campsite.

Michael Jankelowitz - 202-449-6584 Michael is the Shaliach for the Jewish Agency and member of the Department of campus Israel Affairs.  He is a great resource for Israel ideas and creative programming on campus.  I have called him many times and he always returns my calls even from Israel.

Avi Weinstein- 202-449-6592 - "Head Rabbi of Hillel." He is available as a resource to help you incorporate Jewish ideas or learning into a program, plan Shabbatonim as well as (if you are lucky!) be a Scholar in Residence for high-level programs.

UNIVERSITY RESOURCES AND PARTNERS.

Multicultural Information Center Idealistically this is a great department at the university to work with, unfortunately though, we havent had much luck in having the MIC co-sponsor an event.  The individual students that we have worked with on specific projects have been great!  Hopefully in the future we will be able combine our recourses and have an awesome diversity program.

Location: Student Services Building Suite 1.104

Mamta Motwani, Assistant Director: 232.9587

Texas Union The Texas Union is a great location to have programs; all you have to do is reserve a room.  The downside is that the rooms are somewhat confusing to find.  I wish I had more programs at the union because is it so centrally located.  I frequently met people in the union for lunch, which worked out well, because there is such a diversity of food options.  Keep your eyes open for informal class booklets; you might want to participate in something offered.  Classes are usually held at the union.  Margo knows a lot of people there so ask her who will be the best help to you.

Middle Eastern Studies Department The department is located in the West Mall building, and has academic programs in Hebrew Studies, Jewish Studies, Middle Eastern Studies and more.  Most of the Professors in the department have a good relationship with Hillel and are willing to help out in anyway.  We sometimes co-sponsor an event with the Jewish Studies or Hebrew Program and offer our building if needed.

Here are some websites for the department:

Jewish Community Association of Austin The JCAA is located on the 40 Acres of the Dell Campus in the Northwest Hills/ Far West neighborhood.  It is the location of the Jewish Federation of Austin, The Jewish Community Center and The Jewish Family Service.  It has a variety of programs (social, religious, Israel related and educational) for the young and not so young.  We dont normally have any of our programs at the JCAA because it is far from campus, however they co-sponsor some of our programs and we have students who volunteer at or attend their events.

Interfaith Council - The University Interfaith Council is an organization of campus ministers who meet to provide mutual support, to discuss issues and values relevant to our ministries at UT, and to facilitate common programs with each other and with UT Organizations and offices.  The UIC mission and purpose is to provide services to students. Though we are organized on religious and denominational lines, our services and groups are offered to all students, faculty, and staff - free of charge.

Dean of Students office The goal of the Office of the Dean of Students is similar to Hillel in some ways.  It is to help students find their place at this large university.  They offer social events, academic help, leadership training, peer counseling and anything else to help make the students time at UT productive and memorable. http://www.utexas.edu/depts/dos/

Some offices in the Dean of Students that will be helpful to you are:

Campus and community Involvement The CCI deals with all the 750+ registered student organizations at UT.  It handles all the room reservations for campus buildings, the west mall and other rally spaces.  Cheryl Woods is the woman we usually talk to; if we cant get an answer from the person at the desk or over the phone.  Ms. Woods goes strictly by the rules so dont expect her to make any exceptions.

Greek Life and Education The Greek Life and Education area within the Office of the Dean of Students was created in 1988 to assist fraternity and sorority chapters and the respective governing councils with developing skills and values necessary to make a positive contribution to the organizations, the campus community, and the larger society. The mission of the area is to provide support, services, leadership opportunities, and educational programs that assist the governing councils, the collegiate chapters, and the council and chapter officers in developing organizations that promote the principles of scholarship, leadership, and service. Greek Life and Education also serves as a liaison between The University and the chapter advisors, alumni/alumnae and/or the national officers who offer their services in an effort to support the activities and programs of the undergraduate chapters.* (*Taken from the Greek Life web page)

I have spoken with Betty Jeane Wolfe the director of Panhellenic council and she is really accommodating about reaching out to Jewish Greeks.  Her email is Bwolfe@mail.utexas.edu.

Student Governance Student Governance consists of two parts: Student Government and Senate of College Councils.  SG works for all students to improve college life and polices for students and the Senate has a board within each college to improve life for the individual college. Every spring (February March) Students get together to run on tickets.  There is high activity on campus and some bad feelings evolve, so be aware of the Jewish students on different tickets and dont let it effect your relationship with them.  Just be supportive of their involvement and each ticket.

One more thing- We usually have the Israel Block Party around the SG elections so many people from the different tickets volunteer to help out.  It is really neat to see everyone pitching in for your event.

SG president elect- Brent Chaney.

UT Volunteer Center Provides the students with many service opportunities and several service organizations to join all that come out of the Volunteer Center.  Some examples are SVB (student volunteer board), Project Reach Out (a day of volunteering for the campus) and the Running of the Horns (a race to benefit the UT learning and Service Center)

Hamagshamim- Young Judea - Hamagshimim is the University Zionist Movement sponsored by Hadassah. They are a pluralistic student-led organization that works to strengthen students'

connection to Israel through a variety of social, cultural and political programs.  Some programs include: Caravan for Democracy, Hamagshimim Israel Fellowships, and Kinus Hamagshimim (the annual conference).  Texas Hillel has a great relationship with Hamagshimim.  For the past few years they have been the birthright israel tour provider and really developed positive relationships with our students.  If possible, please ask for them to be out tour provider again- it was sooooo great!  Also, the often donate money for our Israel Block Party and this year the Shaliach Alon Friedman and the Director Jonathan Rulnick came to our event.

COJEL Collation on the Environment and Jewish Life founded in 1993 to promote environmental education, scholarship, advocacy, and action in the American Jewish community.  They have great ideas for environmental programming, especially around Tu Bshvat.

http://www.coejl.org/home.shtml

Star of Texas Sally Harrell is our Gal!  She helps us with all our special events.  She is great because she will come and check out the space and help brainstorm ideas.  She is really busy so you have to be flexible with her schedule, and she runs late sometimes,

It is best to reach her on her cell phone 413.9417, but the office is 928.1136.

Israel Aliyah Center This is a great resource for Israel Programs.  I am not sure who the new shliach will be, because the current one is going back to Israel.

Israeli Consulate Located in Houston, the consulate is a hop, skip and jump away for assistance.  There are several departments so check out the website to see which will be most helpful.  They are a great resource and will send you pamphlets and lots of information about israel.  They also have a list of exhibits that travel around so it could be cool to have one of those at Hillel.  http://www.israelemb.org/tx/index.shtml

Anti Defamation League The ADL charter is The immediate object of the League is to stop, by appeals to reason and conscience and, if necessary, by appeals to law, the defamation of the Jewish people. Its ultimate purpose is to secure justice and fair treatment to all citizens alike and to put an end forever to unjust and unfair discrimination against and ridicule of any sect or body of citizens." October 1913

They have a regional office in Houston 713.627.3490 (Dena Marks Assistant Director) and Dallas 972.960.0342 or 960.0343
